I meant to add, in my comment, that I was moved almost to tears, by the video of Hubert Humphrey. Where are people like this when we need them so urgently in public life?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. They remind me of the fact that we can't change the direction of the wind but we can always adjust our sails. When we (only) blame the wind we deprive ourselves of agency and thus become "victims".
Richard—I count myself fortunate to be among the friends with whom you’ve shared your observations, on which I haven’t commented until now. I do not share Hubert Humphrey’s willingness to support the winner in this election. Trump has threatened the Constitution and the rule of law far too often, by word and deed, to entitle him to my support or even my indulgence. I don’t think we can take the risk of not taking his plans for a second term both seriously and literally. As for the majority that elected him, I am,perhaps naively, unwilling to believe that they truly hope for the enactment of his most draconian policies, but I am deeply saddened that they have given him that opportunity. I can only hope that he does not take full advantage of it.

He was a wonderful man.
Richard,
Thank you for your measured and thoughtful response to what the nation has just gone through.
Richard,
